The Brandon Burlsworth Football Camps are held once each summer in Harrison and Little Rock. Hundreds and hundreds of children are given a chance to learn from former Razorback stars such as Anthony Lucas, Clint Stoerner, Joe Dean Davenport, Madre Hill, Grant Garrett, Russ Brown, Barry Lunney Jr., Chad Aberthany and the list goes on and on.

The camp is for youngsters going into 3rd grade through 9th grade. Dates for 2010 are June 4th in Harrison - F.S. Garrison Stadium and June 5th in Little Rock - War Memorial Stadium.

The campers learn football skills but more importantly, they are taught throughout the day about character, attitude, morals, priorities and the desire to do it "The Burls Way." Businesses and individuals from all over the state donate camp scholarships so that so that less fortunate children can attend these camps.

The Razorback players come back year after year and use this time as a reunion of sorts. The players have as much fun, maybe more, as the campers.

Camp Trail: OBU and Brandon Burlsworth
Written by DJ Bates | June 8, 2009

The Coaches Aid Camp Trail will bring you coverage from the numerous sports camps and 7-on-7 tournaments we visit throughout the summer and let you know our humble opinion on the quality of the events. In our first edition, I spent some time at two very different style camps; Wednesday and Thursday at the Ouachita Baptist Football Team Camp and 7-on-7 Tournament and Saturday at the Brandon Burlsworth Football Camp.

You would expect any event led by former Razorback greats Anthony Lucas and Clint Stoerner to be a good one, but sometimes coaching kids in grades 3-9 is more like recess than a football camp.

Not this one.

Clint Stoerner, the unquestioned leader of the Hogs in his time at quarterback in Fayetteville, was in complete control Saturday at War Memorial too. The camp ran from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 and there was no dead time at all, except a couple quick drink breaks. The kids enjoyed the fast pace and seemed to get a lot out of it, despite just four hours of time on the field.

They worked on tackling, holding onto the football, technique and even played a little 7-on-7.

"I'm not out here to waste my time, their time or the parents time," Stoerner said. "We're going to get the most out of these four hours."

Anthony Lucas did a great job as Stoerner's right-hand man. Both, having spent time in the NFL following their career' at Arkansas, passed their knowledge learned in the college and professional ranks on to the kids. Lucas' main theme to the kids was when you get your hands on the ball, whether it is expected like on a hand-off or reception, or unexpected like a fumble recovery or interception, take advantage of it. "Even if your a lineman, safety or wherever," he told the kids. "You might not touch the ball but a few times your whole career, so be ready to make something happen when you do."

Stoerner relished the role of giving back to a state that has given him so much. "I obviously was not born here," he said. "But, I'm here now, glad to help the kids and sure don't plan on ever leaving." A note to you parents out there, the $40 it costs to send your child to this camp is money well spent. When school lets out next summer I would recommend sending any middle school or junior high kid, who is serious about football, to the Brandon Burlsworth Football Camp.
